Aromatherapy Newsletter: Holidays 2021

Greetings Everyone!

This will be our last newsletter before closing for the Holidays, and we wanted to update you on more new stock. We have a gorgeous new batch of Pinyon Pine Essential Oil that is maturing and will be ready in just a couple of weeks! As I mentioned in the last newsletter, the yields of essential oil have been low, but the aromas are amazing. The plants in the entire region are responding to the unusual weather conditions and their essential oils are reflecting this with sweeter than normal aromas. It is often the presence of esters that produce the fruity and sweet top notes. Since environmental conditions in the Southwest are often stressful, and esters have a calming effect on the nervous system, it is my belief that it is a form of botanical self-soothing. Of all of our oils, Arizona Corkbark Fir consistently has the highest volume of Bornyl acetate, an ester with analgesic, anti-inflammatory and sedative effects. In Arizona, it grows on only a few high elevation mountaintops, and ours is from the San Francisco Peaks, starting at the 9,000 foot elevation. Since we have not had any snow yet and are still having very mild weather, we have been able to get up there to do some collecting. We have a beautiful new batch that is just weeks old, and will be fully matured by Christmas.

A Healing Story with Arizona Corkbark Fir

In mid 2019, we traveled to Japan to help our friend’s aging parents plant their rice and harvest vegetables on their small farm. After about a week of helping them and doing a bit of touring, we set off for a fairly remote village in a tea-growing region. On the morning of our full day of travel to get there, I woke up not feeling well, and by the time we arrived in the evening, I had a sore throat. It wasn’t particularly alarming, and I fully expected to wake up feeling better. The next morning I woke with an acute respiratory infection, a high fever and bouts of overly productive spastic coughing. The symptoms were so dramatic and painful that I was afraid I might need to go to the hospital. I was unable to get out of bed without assistance, and food was completely out of the question. There were two things that I craved, however. The first was tea made from Self Heal that we had seen growing wild the evening before, and the second was AZ Corkbark Fir essential oil. Luckily I had packed a bottle! I diluted one drop in Aloe Gelly and applied it to my chest. It helped relieve the spastic coughing and allowed me to sleep. I continued this treatment every few hours. By the next day I was mobile again, and I was confident that I would not need medical attention. By the second day the congestion was greatly reduced and clearing, and my fever had come way down. It took me some time to regain my energy, but once again, I was enormously grateful for plant medicine.

Aspen and Corkbark Fir

Months after this experience, when we were well into the pandemic, I received a newsletter from Original Swiss Aromatics presenting research about the therapeutic benefits of the aromatic components Borneol and Bornyl acetate. They both are very helpful in mitigating the production of pro inflammatory cytokines, and therefore reducing the cytokine storm and chance of Acute Lung Injury (ALI). I knew instantly why I was so intuitively drawn to the AZ Corkbark Fir oil during my experience in Japan. It averages 30 – 35% Bornyl acetate! Original Swiss Aromatics carries other beautiful oils also high in Borneol and Bornyl acetate, such as Inula Graveolens (a botanical cousin of Mexican Arnica!), Borneo Camphor, and Thyme satureioides, all of which are very important at this time!
